Descriptions

The Jeti Lama Rain Garden project introduces a Nature-based Solution within the urban fabric of Bagan Luar, Butterworth, transforming a previously underutilised space into a functional and educational public landscape. Developed through a collaboration between the Penang State Government, Majlis Bandaraya Seberang Perai, and Think City, the project demonstrates a practical approach to integrating ecological systems into everyday urban environments.

At its core, the rain garden functions as a bio-retention system designed in line with the principles of Water Sensitive Urban Design. Stormwater runoff is captured, filtered, and naturally treated through layers of soil, vegetation, and engineered substrates before being released back into the environment. This process helps to improve water quality, reduce surface runoff, and mitigate localised flooding.

The landscape is planted with a selection of hardy, adaptive species that support the filtration process while contributing to biodiversity and seasonal variation. Beyond its technical performance, the space is designed to be accessible and engaging, allowing the public to experience and understand how natural systems can be integrated into urban settings.

By combining infrastructure with landscape, the Jeti Lama Rain Garden serves as both a resilient environmental intervention and a community space, illustrating how small-scale Nature-based Solutions can contribute to broader urban sustainability and liveability.
