Descriptions

The Fountain Garden project marks the restoration of one of George Town’s earliest historic gardens, located along the Northern Seafront between Padang Kota Lama and Dewan Sri Pinang. As part of the George Town North Seafront Master Plan, the project reintroduces the garden as a key civic space within the heritage setting.

Guided by the principles of the ICOMOS Florence Charter, the restoration carefully reconstructs the original layout, informed by archival photographs and historical records. The design re-establishes the prominence of the Koh Seang Tat fountain, a significant landmark donated over a century ago, while strengthening its visual relationship with the adjacent Town Hall.

Planting and spatial composition are thoughtfully reinstated to reflect the character of historic gardens, creating a calm and dignified setting that invites reflection and public use. The restored landscape not only preserves the physical fabric of the site but also revives its cultural memory, offering a glimpse into the atmosphere of George Town in an earlier era.
