Descriptions

The Fort Cornwallis Historical Moat Reinstatement project is a multi-disciplinary effort to restore the 200-year-old moat and its surrounding green space within George Town’s Northern Seafront. Spanning approximately 3.6 acres, the project seeks to revive a significant historic landscape while re-establishing its relationship with the coastal urban fabric.

Guided by conservation principles, the restoration carefully employs traditional materials and construction methods to retain the authenticity and character of the original fort setting. The design reinterprets the historic moat as both a cultural artefact and a functioning landscape element, allowing visitors to experience its heritage value within a renewed public realm.

A key feature of the project is the integration of a phytoremediation channel within the moat system. This approach introduces Nature-based Solutions to improve water quality while supporting a water-sensitive design strategy that responds to the site’s environmental conditions. Native planting and ecological enhancement further contribute to a living system that evolves over time.

By bridging heritage conservation with contemporary landscape thinking, the project transforms Fort Cornwallis into a resilient and engaging civic space, where history, ecology, and public life are brought together in a meaningful and sustainable way.
