Descriptions

The Cenotaph War Memorial project reimagines the grounds surrounding the 100-year-old monument, restoring its presence as a place of remembrance within the George Town Northern Seafront. The intervention focuses on enhancing the dignity and visibility of the memorial while reconnecting it with the public realm.

A key move in the design is the removal of the former perimeter fence, which once separated the site from its surroundings. By opening up the space, the memorial is reintroduced as an accessible civic landmark, inviting reflection, gathering, and shared remembrance within the community.

The revitalised landscape is carefully composed to respect the solemn character of the site while improving spatial clarity and pedestrian movement. Traditional materials and detailing are thoughtfully incorporated, with local craftsmen playing an integral role in delivering key elements of the project. Their involvement ensures that the workmanship reflects both cultural authenticity and a high level of craft.

Through this approach, the project restores the Cenotaph not only as a historic monument, but as a living public space where memory, heritage, and everyday life coexist with quiet dignity.
